In 1751, the trustees asked Parliament for more money to fund the colony and the request was refused.
Discouraged by the lack of prosperity and the colonist complaints, they turned to the king for help, but he refused to aid the colony unless the trustees surrendered the charter. The trustees decided to surrender their charter which was due to expire in two years. As a royal colony, Georgia's government acquired a royal governor, council, and an elected representative assembly. Georgia began to prosper not because of it's royal rule, but because of slaves.
Unfortunately, James Oglethorpe never returned to the colony. Comparing the colony to Oglethorpe's high standards the colony was a failure. Overall, the Colony of Georgia provided a land of opportunities for many poor and persecuted people in Europe.
