The colony of Georgia is important to the study of the settlement of colonial America because it was the last American colony established. It eventually became a royal colony and the colony had it to fight the Spanish.
The colony of Georgia was founded in 1732 by General James Oglethorpe, a former army officer. After leaving the army, he devoted his time to helping the poor in London. He suggested that they settle in America. Georgia was motivated by the idea of creating a defense barrier for South Carolina. Due to South Carolina's importance it attracted many enemies close by. These enemies included the Spanish in Florida, the French in Louisiana and along the Mississippi, as well as the Native Americans. Fun Fact: Georgia is named after King Georgia the II, who was king of Britain when colonist first arrived. |
